Hair is a special part of the body. It has a very important social significance for many people. Everybody thinks about the hair styles as it is one of main components in anyone’s personality. Actually what is hair? Hair is any of the cylindrical, keratinized and pigmented filaments which form the coat or covering of the scalp of a human. That’s the simplest definition of hair. Though hair is simple in structure it has important functions. Hair plays a major role in the appearance of both men and women to have gender identification. It protects head from ultra-violet radiation exposure. And also it helps to transmit sensory information.
Hair loss, also known as alopecia is one of the major problems we face in our lives. Basically everyone loses hair which is about 50-100 hairs per day. It is normal. But if there are bald patches or lots of thinning, it means that the person is experiencing hair loss. Most of us don’t like when we lose hair. It can happen due to aging or hormonal changes in our bodies.
There are various types of hair loss with different symptoms and causes.

Male- and female-pattern baldness
Male-pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. It can also affect women (female-pattern baldness). Male-pattern baldness follows a pattern of a receding hairline, followed by thinning of the hair on the crown and temples. During female-pattern baldness, hair usually only thins on top of the head.
Male- and female-pattern baldness is also called androgenic or androgenetic alopecia.

Alopecia areata
Alopecia areata is patches of baldness that may appear and disappear. Most often it affects teenagers and young adults. But it can occur at any age. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder which means it happens due to a problem with the body’s immune system. And also some experts say that it can happen due to genetic mutations. In many cases the hair grows back after about a year.

Scarring alopecia
Scarring alopecia is hair loss which occurs as a result of complications from another condition. It is also known as cicatricial alopecia. In this type, the hair follicle is completely destroyed. Therefore hair will not grow back.
Some conditions which can cause scarring alopecia include lichen planus (an itchy rash affecting many areas of the body) and discoid lupus (a mild form of lupus affecting the skin, causing scaly marks and hair loss).

Anagen effluvium
Anagen effluvium is widespread hair loss which affects the scalp, face and body. One of the most common causes of Anagen effluvium is the chemotherapy. Hair loss in this type is temporary. When chemotherapy is stopped, hair begins to grow back.

Telogen effluvium
Telogen effluvium is a common type of alopecia where there is widespread thinning of the hair, rather than specific bald patches. Hair loss occurs due to stress or medications. This type of hair loss tends to improve without treatment after a few months.

Hair loss is generally not treated with medications as hair start to grow after few months. But in severe conditions it should be treated. Nowadays hair transplantation is widely used by many people to treat this condition.

Hair transplant surgery involves removing small pieces of scalp hair and hair follicles from an area with a lot of hair to an area with thinning hair or baldness. This technique helps you to have a pleasant look. It is not necessary to worry about yourself due to hair loss because this method gives you a natural look on the forehead and a dense look on the top of the head.
This surgery can be done by few steps. First the patient is prepared for the hair transplant. Then a tube-like instrument which is known as punch graft or a scalpel is used to remove scalp hair and hair follicles from an area with a lot of hair. After being given local anesthesia, the balding area of the patient is ready for the hair transplant. Then tiny incisions are made in the necessary areas and the follicular unit grafts (hair strands) are then transplanted into tiny holes in bald area of the scalp.
After this surgery, the scalp can be very tender. Sometimes patients are asked to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs for several days. Generally patients are asked to wear a special surgical dressing over the scalp for about 2-3 days after the surgery.
Sometimes hair may fall out after it is transplanted. But it is not a serious problem as new hair will grow again in the transplanted hair follicle. Though it will grow again, it may take a period of time before you can see the new hair growth.
Actually the hair transplant surgery is very successful in many patients. But the success and amount of hair coverage on a treated area depends on how many hair follicles remain healthy after being transplanted.
Basically anyone can do the hair transplant surgery. But hair transplant surgery candidates should have healthy hair growth at the back and side of the head. Some other factors such as the color of hair, texture and hair type are also checked before this surgery.

Actually the hair transplant surgery is very helpful to those who suffer with hair loss. But there are some risks of this surgery too.

 Death of the hair follicles after being transplanted, in which case no new hair will grow.
 An unnatural look with a patchy hair pattern.
 Infection.
 Scarring.
 Excessive bleeding.

Hair transplant surgery may be a permanent and very good treatment for hair loss. Though it is expensive and it takes several surgeries and up to 2 years, you will achieve the coverage you want. You will achieve the best result.

As mentioned above, Hair transplant surgery is a very good solution for people who are experiencing hair loss. But it does not mean that everybody can do it. You should be healthy to do it. Therefore before doing hair transplant surgery, it would be better to meet your physician.
